5 Ways I don't want to spend my 50th Birthday

... or any day for that matter...

1- Wearing a tiara
2- Peddling uphill in 90 degree heat (keep in mind my short gams)
3- Watching strangers get drunk
4- Pretending to like Neil Young music
5- Going to 6 bars in 2 hours

But this IS what I would do, and did,  for my friend Maria whose 50th birthday request was the Tucson Trolley pub, better known as a Pedal Pub. (I didn't wear a tiara, but she wore one I gave her, because I knew she would love it) I've only included a few pictures so you could get the idea.

That second shot looks like I've got some vodka stashed in a bag, but trust me I'm "toasting" to cover my face, with seltzer water.

It was a hot sweaty night full of drunk strangers who thought this was the best thing since the interwebs. At my friends request all of the attending pedalers sent me two or three songs in advance and I put together a playlist for the evening. How bad could it be, right?  Yeah.. I totally shoved in good keep you moving songs and tried to drown out clunkers like  Bob Dylan, "Agua de Beber" (I dare you to look that one up on iTunes.. it's awful!) and Neil Young.

Really, social lubrication while pedaling uphill in 90 plus heat takes more musical motivation than smooth jazz with catchy words like "be ba de ba, be dabba dabba de da, be ba de ba". Once we got to some Beatles things smoothed out a bit, and after the first bar stop.. well everyone was pretty happy, except the lady who kept asking where her Neil Young song was. (the only song I left off altogether)

Honestly the night wasn't nearly as bad as I had anticipated, nor was it as banal as I am writing here, but some details are best left un-described.
The important thing...Maria loved it, and since she rarely if ever asks for anything, and is always doing something for me... it was the least I could do.

Just don't do it for me in a few years.
Well...I could give on the tiara.

Ahh...be bop de dum de bah bah...The sure fire recipe for groove. You are SUCH a good friend to do that under one of those circumstances, let alone ALL of the combined!

It DOES make for a good story and you are the master story teller.

I'm proud of you sista!

They have those here now. Saw the first one this summer. It wouldn't be nearly as hot here, but if you ran into some of our hills... What a good sport you are! It wouldn't be first on my list of things to do on my 50th--wait I already had mine and it wasn't on my list at all! So good to have post from you (not that I have done one recently)

Glad you posted a picture, I was having a hard time picturing the trolley pub. Looks like a party for sure:)
You are surely a champ, and Maria is luck to have you!

HeHe that is hilarious, I have to say. Who comes up with this stuff?

I mean I don't care if they had me on a morphine drip I would not want to be pedaling in that kind of heat!

You are a good friend!
