Night Blooming better Than Bleeding

So after my apparently repulsive post showing blood, I thought I'd try to make up for it with a regional curiosity.
A night blooming Cereus. Really, that is the name. I've read about them, but this is the first time I have gotten to see one first hand. Most species bloom in mid summer, but Kelly has an early bloomer. Each blossom lasts just 24 hours and all blossoms open 48 hours after a full moon.

Since I can't take pictures at night these are how the flower looked at 7pm or so. They were stunning at midnight in full flower. They were the size of dinner plates.

I'm also throwing in a bottle brush tree cause it just shows more of the Mars like life here.

As for me. .Well I've been researching Tarot cards for assignments in Italy. (birthplace of the tarot card) and in general trying to get geared up for the trip. Lots of teaching prep to do if I'm going to go play on the non teaching days.

Nothing as exciting as running a half marathon.... really the shaving cut was as exciting as my life gets right now... and that is a good thing.

Ahhhhh, lovely flowers! There are some gorgeous ones there huh? I had never heard of those flowers but they sound amazing and look the same. I didn't know that about the tarot cards...I've been thinking about having the students design a personal tarot card. Do you think I can write the trip off as "official business" doing research?

What beautiful flowers! I wish I could have seen them at midnight.

I'm sure you could use the trip as a write off Crazy.
We WILL be doing research!
We just found out there is a way to pick the Cereus flower and have it open inside so you can take pictures.
you have to put vaseline on the stalk right after picking.
Sadly I won't be here for next months bloom.
(or happily...?)

Hmmmm. Running a half marathon or going to Italy. I think I would take going to Italy! (Especially after the last half!) Beautiful flowers for sure. There are some amazingly beautiful things in the dessert. Unfortunatly they seem to be surrounded but alot of stuff that is incredibly ugly. (At least in my humble opinion) You have to appreciate beauty wherever you find it though! And yes, a way better post than the shaving cut. I guess I should have taken a picture of the dead rat that was in our yard for about two days (until Dennis finally tossed it in the garbage). It was definitely a source of fascination for Cooper. It made me queasy with it's bucky teeth and incredibly long tail. That's was passes for excitement at our house these days!

I would have liked the dead rat picture. Ask Karen, I have lots of dead animal pictures.
Yeah, its the scientist in me.

I was wishing I had taken a picture of it, just for the comedic value but Dennis disposed of it before I thought up the idea. And it sat there for a day or two. I shouldn't tell you where he "disposed" of it but it was in the yard waste. You know clean greens, food - excluding meat. Oh well, it wasn't like I was going to fish it out of there!

Nice pictures. Thanks for not grossing me out again, but I think I was the only person that was. I'm just missing that artist gene. It's totally unfair, but such is life.
